7 Tips for Holiday Sobriety
Holidays can be a tough emotional, lonely, unsure time for alcoholics/addicts. Here’s some ways to get the stress level down & even, maybe, have a good time! π
Navigating the holidays while staying sober can indeed be challenging, but remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Here are a few gentle reminders and tips that might resonate with you:
- Plan Ahead: Think about the situations you’ll be in and how you might respond to offers of alcohol or questions about not drinking. It’s always okay to have a non-alcoholic beverage in hand or to change the subject if you’re uncomfortable.
- Have an Escape Route: It is totally OK to leave an uncomfortable situation! Let a sobriety buddy, supportive friends or family, know your plans and where you’ll be.
- Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to lean on your support network. Whether it’s friends from your recovery program, a sponsor, or understanding family members, having someone to talk to can make a big difference.
- Create New Traditions: The holidays are a great time to start new, sober traditions that bring you joy. This could be anything from a morning walk to volunteering, or even hosting a sober gathering. Many groups and fellowships have pot-luck dinners and marathon meetings!
- Take Time for Self-Care: The holidays can be hectic, so make sure to carve out time for yourself. Whether it’s meditation, reading, or simply taking a quiet moment, self-care is crucial.
- Use Affirmations: Positive affirmations can be very powerful. You might find comfort in repeating phrases like, “I am strong in my sobriety,” or “Each moment sober is a victory.”
- Remember Your ‘Why’: Remind yourself why you chose sobriety and the positive changes it has brought into your life. This can be a powerful motivator to stay the course.
- Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the things you are grateful for. Gratitude can shift your perspective and help you see the richness of your life without alcohol.
